What is Corn Silk?

Corn silk is a long thread-like fiber, found at the top of corn cobs under the husk of fresh corn.

They aid in the pollination and growth of corn but can also be used in traditional medicine practices. Corn silk contains a variety of plant compounds that may be beneficial for health. It is used to treat various ailments such as prostate problems, urinary tract infections and heart disease.

What are the benefits of Corn Silk?

    1. Provides antioxidants

Corn silk is naturally rich in antioxidants because of their high flavonoid and phenolic compound content.

     2. Helps with blood glucose regulation

A study conducted in 2009 shows that corn silk extract reduces blood glucose level in induced diabetic mice through increasing insulin level and recovering injured beta cells.

    3. Anti-inflammatory properties

A study in 2024 shows that corn silk has anti-inflammatory properties effects on mice that were orally administrated with glucose. A significant decrease in systemic inflammation was observed after 8 weeks.

    4. Helps with cholesterol level

A 2020 animal study revealed that mice treated with corn silk extract showed significant decreases in total and LDL (bad) cholesterol, along with increases in HDL (good) cholesterol.
